Yuquan Temple

Yuquan Temple

As the first Buddhism temple in HuBei province, Yuquan Temple has a very long history. As early as in Donghan Dynasty, Pujing Monk began to build thatch huts to practice Buddhism in 218 (the 22nd year of the Jian’an reign). In the Kaihuang reign, Sui Dynasty, the originator of Tian Tai clan of Buddhism, Renzhi Monk formally built Yuquan Temple. In Song Dynasty, the Mingsu Queen extended the temple. And it reached its present scale and had its prosperous time. In 1983, Yuquan Temple was determined as the key Buddhism temple in China by State Council.

Through the ages, hundreds of eminent monks lived in Yuquan Temple. And thousands of poets traveled Yuquan Temple for its beautiful sight. They left many immortal poems and historical sites for us.

Lengjin Iron Tower, It is the tower in the front of the temple to guard the mountain. It was made of pig iron in 1061. The body is firm and lofty.

Daxiong Hall, the main building in Yuquan Temple, built in Ming Dynasty. It is the hall for the worship of Sakyamuni. What’s more, there are more than twenty cultural relics ranging from Sui Dynasty to Qing Dynasty.

Pearl Bridge is in the front of Xianlie Temple. Under the bridge, there is a clear spring flowing through the years. Because of the effect of natural gas from the earth, the spring wells up some blisters from the bottom sometimes, just like a string of pearls. Accordingly, the bridge is called Pearl Bridge.

Yuquan Temple

Golden Glow Cave It is a natural limestone cave on the mountain at the back of the temple. There are thousands of stalactites hanging in the cave, which are dissimilar in shapes and forms. And the wall of the cave will shine golden by the sunlight in the morning or evening. As the result, it gains the name of Golden Glow Cave.

Besides those natural landscapes, the story about Guanyu in the famous Chinese classical literature work “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” gives some mythical color to Yuquan Temple and Yuquan Mountain. You’ll find that all the trees in the Yuquan Temple have a similarity that none of them owns a treetop, why?! Because the general Guanyu only had his body buried here, so that’s why the trees don’t have their head either.

In nowadays, because of the protection and development of the local government, Yuquan Temple becomes a wonderful place for all the tourist to enjoy the natural and humanities landscapes.

Mingfeng Mountain

Mingfeng Mountain

Mingfeng Mountain

Mingfeng Mountain, is a steep and beautiful mountain, is as well-known as Wudang Mountain and it lies 3,500 meters to the southwest of Yuan’an(A county of Yichang city). The acreage of Mingfeng Mountain is 3,000 square meters, with its altitude 408 meters. It is 288 meters high from its foot to the top. There are two paths to get to the top. The north path is narrow and steep, while the south one is rather steeper. Without carefulness one can easily fall into the valley. So here comes a saying “Wudang far, Mingfeng steep”.

Mingfeng Mountain

Mingfeng Mountain

Entering the round gate of beauty spot, you can see two big characters on the “Mingfeng”, which was left by a famous Chinese writer named Wangmeng. Move forward, a human-like huge rock comes in sight. It looks like “goddess of mercy” in fairy tales. Move ahead, there’re Yanxia Cave, Yunxia Cave, Yongsheng Palace, Sanqing Palace, Huanpeng Island and so on.

Mingfeng Mountain

Mingfeng Mountain

Then you come to the entrance, Toutian Gate, and there is a resplendent and magnificent temple above it. One has to climb 1,988 steps of stone ladder to get to the top(I counted myself, it’s exactly the number). The place most worth paying a visit is Mingfeng Mountain Temple. Its acreage is 2,000 square meters with 5 levels of over 30 meters, and 3 palaces are included.

Besides, there are many other scenes on the mountain, such as Mingyue Pavilion, Qingfeng Pavilion, Juxian Bridge, Nanyan Palace, Fengming Floor and so on. BTW, make your wishes here, the god of Mingfeng Mountain will bless you.

Quyuan’s Temple

Quyuan's Temple

Quyuan's Temple

Quyuan’s temple is also called Qingliegong temple .It is located in Guizhou town . In fact ,the original temple was built on Quyuantuo (a little hill) which is not far from Guizhou in the east,at the bank of the Yangtze River. It was said that when Quyuan drowned himself in the Miluo River, a huge divine fish carried his body back to his hometown. It was at this place that the folks found the fish and Quyuan’s body, so Quyuan’s tomb and temple were built here.

That was in the Yuanhe. That was in the Yuanhe 15th year of the Tang dynasty (820 AD) and it has been there for more than 1200 years so far. As the Three Gorges Dam has been being built in Zigui(a county of Yichang city), Quyuan’s temple was then moved to Guizhou and rebuilt newly at the end of 20th century.

Quyuan's Temple

Quyuan's Temple

The new temple leans against a big mountain and faces to the Yangtze River. It is surrounded by green orange trees and cypress trees. The temple includes Shanmen(a memorial archway),a bronze statue of Quyuan, a corridor, a display house and Quyuan’s tomb in which his clothes only were berried. These five constituent parts are placed in a series along the mountain. They look simple, quiet, and solemn.

Quyuan's Temple

Quyuan's Temple

Shanmen is a forecourt of the temple and is enclosed on three sides with porticoes. The great Chinese revolutionist and modern poet Guo Moruo’s original handwriting of Chinese words “Quyuan’s Temple” is set at the top of it. On the left and the right sides, there are Chinese words “Guozhong”, which means Quyuan was absolutely loyal to his king , and “Liufang”, which means Quyuan left a good name for a hundred generations. The whole archway is quilt, unostentatious, elegant and magnificent.

The bronze statue stands at the middle yard of the temple. On the steles of the corridor, Quyuan’s main poetic works “Lisao”,”Tianwen”,”Jiuge”,”Jiuzhang” etc. are enchased and you can also see the works of some other famous poems in various Chinese dynasties.

In Quyuan’s hometown, the natural scenery spots are famous because of him; the customs are formed because of him, even birds and fishes, are relative to him. It is called a Quyuan’s system. In the folks’ heart, he was not a human being, but a saint and a celestial being. There are many popular legends about him. Shuibuya, Geheyan, Gaobazhou Hydropower Station

There’re dosens of hydropower stations on the Yangtze river, if you’re fancy about the man-made project, the three projects down below in Qingjiang area will meet exactly your need.

Hydropower Station

Hydropower Station

Shuibuya Hydropower Project is a 233-meter-high dam. It will have an installed capacity of 1.6 million kw and will be able to generate 3.92 billion kwh of electricity annually when finished. Shuibuya reservoir will be able to store 4.58 billion cu m of water. The completion of Shuibuya Hydropower Project will play an important role in regulating water peaks on Yangtze River during summer flood season and power supply peaks on central China power grid, enhancing safe operation reliability of local power grids. It will help reduce direct economic losses from flooding by 15 billion yuan. The Shuibuya power station project, the biggest aid-the-poor propeller project in the southwest of Hubei Province’s ethnic minority areas, provided a total of 90,000 job opportunities, and created 1.07 percent of Hubei Province’s GNP.

Hydropower Station

Hydropower Station

Geheyan Hydropower Station, 93 km downstream from Shuibuya Project, has an installed generating capacity of 1.2 million kw and has been in operation since 1998. During the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, in Changyang County, Yichang, Hubei Province, the Geheyan Hydropower Station was built with funds provided by the central and provincial governments. It is a key water conservancy project. The station consists of a dam, a powerhouse and a lift. The dam is a heavy-pressure dam and the storage capacity is 3.4 billion cubic meters. The four generating units installed have a capacity of 1.211 million KW. The station is the first power one in the Qingjiang Step Power Stations Project. In 1998, Premier Zhu Rongji said,”The Geheyan Hydropower Station has played an important role in this year’s flood fighting, and I’d like to extend my gratitude to the whole staff.”

Hydropower Station

Hydropower Station

Gaobazhou Hydropower Station was built in Yidu, Hubei Province in 1997. It is the lowest dam of the three step power stations on the Qingjiang River.
It is 50 kilometers from the Geheyan Hydropower Station on the upper section of the river, 12 kilometers from the juncture of the Yangtze and Qingjiang Rivers and 45 kilometers from the Gezhouba Hydropower Station. The station consists of a concrete heavy-pressure dam with facilities for navigation and a riverbed powerhouse.

The three power stations have greatly helped to develop transportation, municipal construction, tourism and telecommunication facilities in the backward riverine areas.

The Qingjiang River

It is called the Qingjiang River because the water in it is so pure and clear that you can almost see its bottom far away. It has a high reputation of 800-mile gallery with rich water resources and attractive sceneries. Especially after the Geheyan Water Control Project was completed, the Qingjiang River in Changyang(a county of Yichang city) has become a natural lake with a lot of tiny islands.

Qingjiang Gallery

Qingjiang Gallery

Qingjiang River is a river with 15 meters to 200 meters plus surface. You can feel the stimulating speed while rafting the Qingjiang River and watching the dreamlike gallery as if you were placed yourself in a dreamworld.

It is the best season for rafting and drifting in the Qingjiang River from April to October every year. In this season river water volume is bigger and current is more fluent. Sitting in a rubber dinghy, you have to pass through 48 riptides and dangerous shoals, of which the biggest fall is 4 meters, jump over 5 sections of canyons. In the fluent slow surface, you may see lots of separate sands and lonesome sceneries; It is after all an exited journey!

You may know the three gorges of the very Three Gorges, but during your journey on the Qingjiang River, there’s another three gorges, here we call them “the Smaller Three Gorges”.

Qingjiang Gallery

Qingjiang Gallery

The first gorge is called Pingluo Gorge, which is situated between the Geheyan Water Control Project and Wuluozhongli Mountain, with the total length of 10 km.Because the Qingjiang River and the Pingluo Stream joins here, it is given the name the Pingluo Gorge, which is the longest one of the Qingjiang Three Gorges. In the river there is a long island surrounded with water, which forms a natural wild zoo. Well, obviously, monkey is the seen mostly creature on both sides of the gorge.

Qingjiang Gallery

Qingjiang Gallery

The second gorge is called Bashan Gorge, whose ancient name was Han Pass. It winds from the east of gorge mouth in Duzhengwan, to the west of Xiwan in Machi, which the total length is 5km. The mountains there are high and steep. In the gorge there are Chessboard Cave and Bashan Cave, in which there are a lot of wonderful stones like lions, elephants, dragons, snakes and so on.

Qingjiang Gallery

Qingjiang Gallery

The third gorge is Banxia Gorge, which comes from Zhaolai Stream and runs into the Dragon Pool. The total length of the Gorge is 5km. There are two unique hills in the gorge. One is elegant and the other is magnificent. They look like a close couple, thus it gained the name of Banxia Gorge. Besides this, there are other very interesting scenic spots like “Three Scenes of Banxia Gorge”—-the first scene is Thin Knife Cliff, the second is Lion Cave and the third is Salty Pool.

It’s totally different feeling to visit both the Three Gorges and the smaller Three Gorges, you’ll agree with me after your experience towards them!

Swifting on water- Shennongxi River

Swifting on water - Shennongxi River

Swifting on water - Shennongxi River

The Shennongx River, also called the Yandu River, is located on the north bank of the new Badong county. The name Shenlong comes from a peak with a shape of a human figure, which has been regarded as Shennong, an ancient emperor. It is the first tributary, which the Yangtze River meets after coming out of the Wu Gorge to go into the Xiangxi River Broad Valley. For thousands of years, the Shennongxi River lies among countless mountains and deep valleys like a huge dragon.

Then, at Xixiangkou in Badong county, Hubei Province, it flows into Yangtze River quietly. Before the Three Gorges reserved water, the rising of the water level didn’t weaken the gorge sense of the gorges of the Shennongxi River. The distance between both banks of the river is only 50 to 60 meters. Mountains are still lofty. Today, the Shennongxi River is a green world. Water is green, mountains are green. And this green is just beside you hand.

With deep gorges, flourishing trees and shadows reflecting on clear waters, this place has been a beautiful resort in the new Three Gorges.

This tremendous gorge stretches 5.7km with steep slopes facing each other, the closest distance being even less than 20 meters. When visiting the gorge on a boat, Dufu, a poet of Tang Dynasty, once wrote” Like a long serpent the river wanders, with villages in its folds. From the cave of Dragon my boat comes, to visit the families under rough loads.” This gorge consists of two parts, which are named as Stone Coffin Gorge and Broken Stone Gorge respectively.

On both sides of the gorge grow a great deal of bamboos. With beautiful shades of bamboo and tremendous steep rock cliffs, this gorge is a marvelous exhibition of natural beauty as well as a museum of records of ancient geographical movement.

Swifting on water - Shennongxi River

Swifting on water - Shennongxi River

Stalagmites can be seen here growing in exotic shapes, some of them being more than 200 meters wide. The narrowest section of the river is only 5 meters wide, from where only a narrow stripe of sky can be seen above. When traveling on the local pea-shape boats under the cliff, you will be assured to have once been in a fairyland.
