The Shipai Scenery

Ready to indulge yourself into the nature’s embrace again?! Come and visit our ancient Shipai Town(Stone Tablet Town in English), named from a megalith like a huge stele at the central part of Elephant Trunk Mountain on the south bank of the Yangtze River. It’s located on Dengying Gorge between Gezhou Dam and the Three Gorges Dam.

The Shipai Scenery

The Shipai Scenery

The Stone Tablet with its natural barrier,an impregnable pass of the Three Gorges, was an important place for military strategists to occupy from ancient time. During the Second World War, the Stone Tablet site was the key fortress for chinese armies to guard Chongqing against Japanese troops.

Now, the ancient town has become a famous tourist district. Its characteristic can be summed up in the words: One, Two, Three and Four.

The Shipai Scenery

The Shipai Scenery

The One means it is a very one place you can’t miss during your travelling in Yichang, and the Two is for 2 streams of Yangjia Stream and Longjin Stream. The Three refers the 3 bests, the best stone of the Yangtze River: Lamp Shadow Stone; the best gulf in the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River: Mingyue Gulf; the best cave along Xiling Gorge: Dengying Cave; and the Four points the Frog Spring flattered as the fourth spring in the world.

There’re some brief introductions about the attractions mentioned above:

The Shipai Scenery

The Shipai Scenery

The drifting in Yangjia Stream is an exploring trip full of military color. The valley shows much beauty of magnificence, peril, seclusion and elegance in the Three Gorges. It covers a distance of 7.5km, including a 6km’s gliding on the rapid water, and a 1.5km’s floating on the still water by boats. When wearing colorful military uniforms and caps in a colorful military boat, you would be really experiencing a military exercise in a rushing river.

Dengying Stone, Shadow Show Stone in English, was named from the four strange stones standing upright on the mountain peak, which look like the images of Master Tang and his apprentices in the story of the Journey to the West. Monkey King is gazing at the distant way on one foot, Piggy, with its naked chest and belly, Master Tang praying piously and Monk Sha carrying the luggage. When the setting sun shines behind the peak, the stones are just like the four characters in the shadow show. Becasue it depends on the sunlight to form its shadow, so here in yichang, we locals believe that if you’re able to spot the shadows in the first place, then it’s a blessing to you.

The Shipai Scenery

Dengying Cave, also Lamp Shadow Cave in English, with the outside of smooth cliff, has a special space inside. In the hole, there are numerous stalactites, stone bamboo shoots, stone curtains and so on everywhere, which look so fancy and beautiful. If hitting a stone bamboo shoot with your hand, you would hear the loud sound like thunders. Into the deep part of the cave, I’m sure the natural music (played by the flowing underground river) would attract you.

Out of the cave soon comes a small bridge over Longjin Stream. Standing on it, you would see a dark blue rock belt twisting along the mountain and goes down on the opposite bank, which can be imagined as a dancing giant dragon with its head suddenly rising near the river.

The dragon looks like to pass the river and then enter this stream, and that’s how the stream gets its name — the Longjin Stream(Coming Dragon Stream in English).

Walking along the stream, you would be very lucky to appreciate two wonderful falls in quite different styles. One is Huanglong Fall(Yellow Dragon Fall in English),  rushing out of the rocky wall and roaring magnificently. The other is Qin Fall(Stringed Instrument Fall in English) hanging upon the high cliff and dripping gracefully.

In Shipai Scenery, tons of the great stories and legends would impress you a lot, and the fantastic nature would reward you with a satisfactory trip, enjoy it!

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

There is an amazing gorge area named Xiaofeng, which is called “another beautiful peak in the Three Gorges’ gallery”. Away from Yichang, 25 kilometers in the west along the Yizi highway, Here it has rich sunshine, terrific mountains, and wonderful landscapes.

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

You can not help spending more time here for various natural wonders such as the Lovers’ spring water in the underground longest river, the hundred meters high waterfall in Baiguoshu, dangerous but exciting Gulong River, the mysterious coffins in rock, and etc. It’s one of the most attractive travel places in the mouth area of the Three Gorges.

The ancient coffins in rock is mystery. The first must-see mystery is the coffins in rock during our trip in Xiaofeng.
Across the chain bridge, the Yin-yang Bridge, we are entering the place. Among the total thirteen coffins , five coffins are stored here that we can see clearly, while the rest 8 ones are kept in natural caves to keep its original states. In China, it’s the only Ba people’s burial heritage that was kept in original state to enable the closest viewing. According to the C14 historical test done by the National Archaeology Institute , the skeleton was buried in around 270 years BC.

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

According to the Chinese history, that time is the end of the Fighting Kingdoms Period, and is almost 2,300 years away from nowadays. The most wonderful mystery is that, 2,300 years ago, under the condition of undeveloped technologies, how the Ba people lifted such 100 kilos coffin into the natural cave in the cliff that is 350 meters to the mountaintop and nearly 200 meters above the ground? Many people gave their concluded solutions, such as rope lifting, diastrophism, ladder lifting, earth platform lifting, tunnel sending, wood picket lifting, and etc. But, actually, up to now, the experts still did not find their real approaches.

The Lovers’ Spring

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

It is on the other side of the river, just opposite to the coffins in rock, we can see an underground river about more than 10km long integrating the caves, springs and waterfalls. The Baiyunyan Water-Eroded cave is about 700 million years old which is rare in the nation.

It was found in 1997,and was opened to the public in April, 1998. Why the spring was called Lovers’ spring? Because the two stalactite rocks, which look like a couple of lovers, are the symbol of the Lovers’ Spring. They lean close to each other standing here for thousands of years without leaving each other. All the solemn pledges of love made by the human beings seem incomparable with their loving history, magically, behind the couple there stands another third person who is all wet by tears. The nature returns the real love to the human being and nature itself.

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

Xiaofeng Gorge Area

Six km away from the Lovers’ Spring is the Baiguoshu Waterfall. Here it has ever been chosen as the camera location for a film named ”The Tour Package for Fit Keeping”. It’s an attractive gorge integrating sceneries, cultures, nature, exploration, and recreation.

Three Visitors’ Cave

Three Visitors' Cave

Three Visitors

Three Visitors’ Cave, Situated in the Xiling Mountains on the outskirts of Yichang. It is a tourist highlight both because of its approximate to Yichang and the spectacular terrain it is on. Its top commands a view of Nanjin Pass where the dangerous upper section of the Yangtze River gives way to the middle reaches along which navigation is relatively easy.

Three Visitors' Cave

Three Visitors

The name of Three Visitors’ Cave was from a story. A story says that, in 819,the Tang poet Bai Juyi(772—864) and his younger brother came across another poet Yuan Zhen(779—831). The three visited the cave together and each inscribed a long poem on its walls in praise of it. In his introduction of the spot, Bai wrote: “Since the three of us are the first to visit this cave, I name it Three Visitors’Cave.” In 1056,Su Xun(1009-1066)and his sons,Su Shi(1036-1101)and Su Zhe(1039-1112), all men of letters of the subsequent Song Dynasty, came to visit the cave on their way to the imperial capital to take civil service examinations. Each of them also wrote a poem on its stone walls.

Three Visitors' Cave

Three Visitors

Three stalactites divide it into two chambers, the front one being spacious and bright and the rear one having a ceiling shaped like a hanging bell. The floor of the cave issues the sound of a drum when the tourist stamps his feet on it, and smaller rocks near its walls sound like a chime when struck. These are three wonders of Three Visitors’ Cave: Heavenly Bell, Earth Drum, and Side Chime. More than forty stone inscriptions both inside and outside the cave are still discernible, including Bai Juyi’s “Introduction to Three Visitors’ Cave” and some writings by the Song scholar Ouyang Xiu (1007-1072).

There are pictures of National flowers, introductions of the countries and autographs of the planters there.
