Shuibuya, Geheyan, Gaobazhou Hydropower Station

There’re dosens of hydropower stations on the Yangtze river, if you’re fancy about the man-made project, the three projects down below in Qingjiang area will meet exactly your need.

Hydropower Station

Shuibuya Hydropower Project is a 233-meter-high dam. It will have an installed capacity of 1.6 million kw and will be able to generate 3.92 billion kwh of electricity annually when finished. Shuibuya reservoir will be able to store 4.58 billion cu m of water. The completion of Shuibuya Hydropower Project will play an important role in regulating water peaks on Yangtze River during summer flood season and power supply peaks on central China power grid, enhancing safe operation reliability of local power grids. It will help reduce direct economic losses from flooding by 15 billion yuan. The Shuibuya power station project, the biggest aid-the-poor propeller project in the southwest of Hubei Province’s ethnic minority areas, provided a total of 90,000 job opportunities, and created 1.07 percent of Hubei Province’s GNP.

Geheyan Hydropower Station, 93 km downstream from Shuibuya Project, has an installed generating capacity of 1.2 million kw and has been in operation since 1998. During the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, in Changyang County, Yichang, Hubei Province, the Geheyan Hydropower Station was built with funds provided by the central and provincial governments. It is a key water conservancy project. The station consists of a dam, a powerhouse and a lift. The dam is a heavy-pressure dam and the storage capacity is 3.4 billion cubic meters. The four generating units installed have a capacity of 1.211 million KW. The station is the first power one in the Qingjiang Step Power Stations Project. In 1998, Premier Zhu Rongji said,”The Geheyan Hydropower Station has played an important role in this year’s flood fighting, and I’d like to extend my gratitude to the whole staff.”

Gaobazhou Hydropower Station was built in Yidu, Hubei Province in 1997. It is the lowest dam of the three step power stations on the Qingjiang River.
It is 50 kilometers from the Geheyan Hydropower Station on the upper section of the river, 12 kilometers from the juncture of the Yangtze and Qingjiang Rivers and 45 kilometers from the Gezhouba Hydropower Station. The station consists of a concrete heavy-pressure dam with facilities for navigation and a riverbed powerhouse.

The three power stations have greatly helped to develop transportation, municipal construction, tourism and telecommunication facilities in the backward riverine areas.

The Qingjiang River

It is called the Qingjiang River because the water in it is so pure and clear that you can almost see its bottom far away. It has a high reputation of 800-mile gallery with rich water resources and attractive sceneries. Especially after the Geheyan Water Control Project was completed, the Qingjiang River in Changyang(a county of Yichang city) has become a natural lake with a lot of tiny islands.

Qingjiang River is a river with 15 meters to 200 meters plus surface. You can feel the stimulating speed while rafting the Qingjiang River and watching the dreamlike gallery as if you were placed yourself in a dreamworld.

It is the best season for rafting and drifting in the Qingjiang River from April to October every year. In this season river water volume is bigger and current is more  fluent. Sitting in a rubber dinghy, you have to pass through 48 riptides and dangerous shoals, of which the biggest fall is 4 meters, jump over 5 sections of canyons. In the fluent slow surface, you may see lots of separate sands and lonesome sceneries; It is after all an exited journey!

You may know the three gorges of the very Three Gorges, but during your journey on the Qingjiang River, there’s another three gorges, here we call them “the Smaller Three Gorges”.

The first gorge is called Pingluo Gorge, which is situated between the Geheyan Water Control Project and Wuluozhongli Mountain, with the total length of 10 km.Because the Qingjiang River and the Pingluo Stream joins here, it is given the name the Pingluo Gorge, which is the longest one of the Qingjiang Three Gorges. In the river there is a long island surrounded with water, which forms a natural wild zoo. Well, obviously, monkey is the seen mostly creature on both sides of the gorge.

The second gorge is called Bashan Gorge, whose ancient name was Han Pass. It winds from the east of gorge mouth in Duzhengwan, to the west of Xiwan in Machi, which the total length is 5km. The mountains there are high and steep. In the gorge there are Chessboard Cave and Bashan Cave, in which there are a lot of wonderful stones like lions, elephants, dragons, snakes and so on.

The third gorge is Banxia Gorge, which comes from Zhaolai Stream and runs into the Dragon Pool. The total length of the Gorge is 5km. There are two unique hills in the gorge. One is elegant and the other is magnificent. They look like a close couple, thus it gained the name of Banxia Gorge. Besides this, there are other very interesting scenic spots like “Three Scenes of Banxia Gorge”—-the first scene is Thin Knife Cliff, the second is Lion Cave and the third is Salty Pool.

It’s totally different feeling to visit both the Three Gorges and the smaller Three Gorges, you’ll agree with me after your experience towards them!
